Muehlenbeckia australis Details

Muehlenbeckia australis, commonly known as Pohuehue, is a low growing ground cover plant or vigorous climbing vine. This NZ native forms a dense mat of wiry, brown stems carrying small, green leaves. The foliage is adorned with masses of white flowers through summer which result in small, white berries. It typically grows to 60 cm tall and 2 m wide as a groundcover, but will climb fences, trees, and anything else in its way with its twining stems to 10 m or more. It performs best when planted in in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site and is tolerant of extended dry periods, coastal conditions, frost, and cool climates. Muehlenbeckia australis is great for covering large areas quickly. It makes for an attractive ground cover and will tolerate a reasonable amount of foot traffic. However, it will tend to grow over everything in its path so trimming may be required depending on its use.
