Parsonsia heterophylla, aptly named the NZ Jasmine, is a NZ native climber that produces scented flowers. It bears masses of small, fragrant, cream-white flowers during summer which are quite spectacular. The fleshy and glossy, dark green leaves provide a lovely backdrop to the flowers. This climber is fast growing and will reach upwards of 10 m in length but can be contained with trimming. It performs best when planted in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered site. It is tolerant of light frost and periods of dry as well as semi-shade conditions. Parsonsia heterophylla is commonly used as a climber on a trellis or other structure but can also be used to spill over a wall. It should be planted so the lovely fragrance can be enjoyed.
