Phaseolus caracalla Details

Phaseolus caracalla, commonly known as the Snail Vine, is a climber grown for its fragrant, corkscrew-like flowers which are coloured pink, purple and cream. These showy blooms are borne through summer and autumn, and sit just abreast of the lush, dark green foliage. The contrast between the colours gives an impressive display. It grows quickly as a twining vine to a height of 6 m or more, but can be trimmed as necessary. It may die back during winter but will generally regrow again in spring. The Snail Vine grows best in full sun, on a well-drained, sheltered site. Frosts will knock the plant back so protection of young plants is essential. Phaseolus caracalla is perfect for growing on fences or other structures where quick coverage with an attractive plant is required. It is also well suited for tropical plantings. The flowers provide an interesting talking point and provide a lovely fragrance.
