Thunbergia alata

Black-Eyed Susan Vine

Thunbergia alata, commonly known as the Black-Eyed Susan Vine, is an evergreen climber grown for its impressive flowers. Soft looking blooms appear from late spring through to early autumn and are typically orange with a characteristic dark centre. It has twinning stems with arrow-shaped, mid green leaves. This climber will easily reach 2.5 m tall but can be trimmed as necessary. Best growth is achieved when planted in full sun or partial shade on a sheltered, well-drained site. In temperate areas this plant should be treated as an annual as frosts will damage the plant. Black-Eyed Susan is commonly trained on a trellis, included in tropical gardens, or planted anywhere its magnificent flowers can be appreciated.
