Asiatic Jasmine, Japanese Star Jasmine

Trachelospermum asiaticum, commonly known as Asiatic Jasmine Plant, Asian Star Jasmine, Yellow Star Jasmine, or Japanese Star Jasmine, is an evergreen climber which can also serve as a groundcover. It carries dense and lush, glossy, dark green leaves which serves as a lovely backdrop to the small and fragrant, cream-white flowers. Left untrimmed it will grow to 8 m in length. Trachelospermum asiaticum is commonly used as a hardy groundcover, allowed to climb a trellis or the like, planted so it can spill over a wall, or used in cottage or “white” gardens.

Does Trachelospermum asiaticum make a good ground cover plant?

Trachelospermum asiaticum is an excellent ground cover plant if it has nothing to climb. It features beautiful flowers that are set against glossy, deep green leaves. The masses of fragrant, cream-white flowers afford an intoxicating fragrance. It is fast growing and forms a dense, low carpet of foliage. The thick foliage suppresses any weeds from growing and can help protect delicate soils from rain, thereby reducing erosion. It will spread to 2-3 m wide in just three years and requires little maintenance aside from watering during dry periods, occasional trimming, and a fertiliser application in spring. Moreover, Trachelospermum asiaticum can be grown on a wide variety of soil types, barring the extremes of wet and dry, and in partial shade.

Trachelospermum asiaticum vs jasminoides – what is the difference?

While both Trachelospermum asiaticum (Asiatic Jasmine) and Trachelospermum jasminoides (Star Jasmine) are evergreen, twining climbers with fragrant flowers and milky sap, they have several key differences. Asiatic Jasmine has smaller leaves which are usually a darker, duller green. Asiatic Jasmine produces smaller flowers that are typically cream-white and then age to a yellowish colour. Star Jasmine has larger flowers which are usually pure white. Asiatic Jasmine is generally a slower grower and has a denser, lower-growing habit. Asiatic Jasmine is generally considered more cold-hardy than Star Jasmine. Both are fragrant, but some describe Asiatic Jasmine as having an even more powerful fragrance, sometimes with a hint of gardenia. Star Jasmine is known for its sweet, jasmine-like scent, sometimes described with vanilla notes.
