Picea smithiana is commonly grown as a specimen in parks or large gardens but is also well suited to being planted for shelter and screening where space affords.

Picea smithiana, commonly known as the Himalayan Spruce, is a large and fast-growing conifer. This evergreen tree features soft looking, dark green foliage that appears to hang from near horizontal branches. The foliage is complemented with small, purple cones in summer. It grows with an upright and somewhat narrow growth habit to eventually reach about 20 m tall and 8 m wide. Best performance with this tree is achieved when it is grown in full sun on a well-drained site with good moisture during dry periods. It is tolerant of cool climates, coastal environments, and frost. Picea smithiana is commonly grown as a specimen in parks or large gardens but is also well suited to being planted for shelter and screening where space affords.
