Athyrium niponicum, commonly known as the Japanese Painted Fern, is a hardy and attractive fern. This selection grows compactly with fronds that are dark green with an olive and silver overlay. It typically grows to 50 cm tall and 1 m wide, growing best in partial shade or full shade conditions on a well-drained site that does not dry out. Good moisture is essential for this fern and in colder conditions it may die back during winter to reshoot in spring.
