Blechnum penna-marina, commonly known as the Alpine Water Fern, is a NZ native fern grown for its petite size and colourful fronds. New fronds in spring emerge a copper-red colour and gradually fade to a rich green. It typically grows to 20 cm tall and 30 cm wide. Blechnum penna-marina plant will slowly creep across the ground to fill cracks and crevices which makes it perfect for planting between paving stones or on rock walls, or for using as a groundcover in woodland plantings.

Blechnum penna-marina Details

Blechnum penna-marina, commonly known as the Alpine Water Fern, is a NZ native fern grown for its petite size and colourful fronds. New fronds in spring emerge a copper-red colour and gradually fade to a rich green. It typically grows to 20 cm tall and 30 cm wide, growing best in moist conditions with dappled sunlight on a well-drained site. Blechnum penna-marina plant will slowly creep across the ground to fill cracks and crevices which makes it perfect for planting between paving stones or on rock walls. It can also be used as a small-scale groundcover and is often used for planting under larger, deciduous trees and shrubs, or in woodland plantings.
