Cyathea medullaris, commonly known as the Black Tree Fern, is a large, NZ native fern that can grow up to 20 m tall. The fronds are dark green, up to 5 m long, and arch gracefully from the crown. Cyathea medullaris is ideal for riparian planting, revegetation projects, native gardens, or adding to a mixed planting in a large garden.

Cyathea medullaris, commonly known as the Black Tree Fern, is a large, NZ native fern that can grow up to 20 m tall. The trunk is black and covered with hexagonal shapes which are the scars from old fronds being shed. The fronds are dark green, up to 5 m long, and arch gracefully from the crown. Cyathea medullaris grows well in full sun through to shaded conditions on a range of soil types (except extreme wet) that do not dry out. The Black Tree Fern is ideal for riparian planting, revegetation projects, native gardens, or adding to a mixed planting in a large garden.
