Rabbits Foot Fern, Giant Hares Foot Fern
Davallia solida, commonly known as the Giant Hares Foot Fern, is a New Zealand native grown as an attractive and somewhat unusual evergreen fern. It carries finely dissected, flat, triangular fronds. Its unusual feature is that it creeps along surfaces with thick, furry storage roots. This allows it to grow on trees, rocks, and the like. It typically grows to 30 cm tall and 40 cm wide and may die back during cold periods to regrow again as temperatures warm. It thrives in moist, shady, sheltered areas and is hardy to frosts. Davallia solida is commonly grown by streams, on rotting logs, or included woodland gardens. A mass planting is very effective as a groundcover.
