Dicksonia fibrosa, commonly known as the Ponga Tree, has a solid and fibrous, brown trunk which carries a crown of dark green fronds up to 3 m long. Older fronds tend to remain on the trunk to form a skirt. Dicksonia fibrosa, commonly known as the Ponga Tree, is an impressive, NZ native, tree fern. It has a solid, fibrous, brown trunk which carries a crown of dark green fronds up to 3 m long. Older fronds tend to remain on the trunk to form a skirt. It is relatively quick growing and typically reaches 6 m tall and 4 m wide, preferring a full sun or partial shade position and a well-drained site. Shelter and good soil moisture during dry periods are important for this fern, and it will tolerate moderate frost. Dicksonia fibrosa is commonly planted in damp and shady areas, used in revegetation projects, included in mixed plantings, used as a backdrop for smaller plants, added to woodland gardens, or grown around water features such as ponds and streams.
