Polystichum vestitum

Prickly Shield Fern, Puniu

Commonly known as the Prickly Shield Fern, this is a very hardy, NZ native Fern. It bears large fronds that are green with a silver overtone. They are held as a rosette with new fronds emerging a lighter green and somewhat twisted. The fronds are prickly to touch. It typically grows to 70 cm tall and the 1.2 m wide, preferring a partial shade position and a well-drained, sheltered site that does not dry out. It is tolerant of mild frost once established, cool climates, heavy shade, and fairly poor soil conditions. The Prickly Shield Fern is commonly used in woodland plantings, added to native plantings, or included in a mixed planting.
