Phormium cookianum hookeri is a variety of flax that produces long and broad, gently arching, green leaves. Tall stems rise above the foliage in spring and bear dull pink or yellow flowers in summer which are great for attracting birds. This flax typically grows to 2 m tall and the same wide with a tidy and compact habit. It performs best and produces the most intense leaf colourings when planted in full sun on a well-drained site. It will tolerate frost, coastal conditions, wind, poor soils, moderate shade, and cool climates. Phormium cookianum hookeri makes a fantastic addition to mixed plantings and coastal gardens. It is commonly planted around water features, pool and barbecue areas, and other living areas. It is also well suited for mass planting on a bank and in these situations provides an impressive display.
