Phormium tenax purpurea Details

Phormium tenax Purpurea is a variety of Flax that produces long and broad, purple, sword like-leaves. The leaves have a gentle arch and are very aesthetic. Tall stems rise above the foliage in spring and bear red flowers in summer which are great for attracting birds. This variety typically grows to 1.5 m tall and the same wide with a tidy and compact habit. It grows best and produces the most intense leaf colourings when planted in full sun on a well-drained site. It will tolerate frost, coastal conditions, wind, poor soils, and cool climates. Phormium tenax Purpurea is commonly added to a mixed planting, used in border, grown as an informal hedge, planted around water features, added to coastal gardens, or planted around outdoor living areas. It is also well suited for mass planting on a bank and in these situations provides an impressive display.
