Commonly known as the Tamarillo or Tree Tomato, this is a small tree or shrub that bears egg-shaped, tasty fruit. This evergreen has large, mid-green leaves and grows quickly to 4 m tall and 3 m wide, though it can be contained with trimming. White flowers appear in spring and are followed by the purple-dark red fruit in summer. Best performance with this variety is achieved when it is grow in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered site that is frost free. Once established they will cope with one or two mild frosts only. Tamarillos are commonly grown for fruit production, added to tropical plantings, included in mixed plantings, or planted against a bland wall to provide both depth and colour.
