Commonly known as Walnut, this is a large, deciduous tree grown for its edible nuts. Leaves emerge a fresh green in spring, mature to dark green in summer, then develop colourful, yellow tones in autumn before falling. Small, yellow flowers in spring result in the tasty nuts in autumn. The nuts are initially enclosed in a tight green husk before opening and falling in autumn. This tree will grow to 25 m tall and 18 m wide and prefers a full sun position on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of cool climates, frost, and moderate wind, though shelter from wind is important while it is establishing. This Walnut is commonly included in large gardens as a specimen, grown as a shade tree, or simply planted for nut production.
