“Okitsu Wase” is an early producing variety of Mandarin that bears sweet fruit that are easy to peel. The fruit are low acid and will be seedless unless planted close to other citrus varieties. They ripen in winter and will hold on the tree for several weeks before going off. The lush foliage is glossy and dark green and becomes adorned with white flowers in late summer. This selection is fast growing and typically reaches 2.5 m tall and 1.5 m wide, and can be trimmed as necessary. Best performance with this variety is achieved when it is grown in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered site, and protected from heavy frost. Citrus will generally tolerate moderate frost once established. “Okitsu Wase” is commonly included in a mixed planting, maintained in a container, used in a courtyard garden, or grown as a specimen.
