Apple Maypole
The Maypole apple tree is a unique variety of crabapple that grow as an upright, narrow column and bears fruit off that column. The result is a tree that grows to just 60 cm wide and can be topped at any height up to 3.5 m. The small fruit in autumn are glossy and dark red with flesh that is both crisp and excellent for making into crab apple jelly. It does require another variety planted nearby such as Bolero or Polka to produce fruit. The Maypole apple tree is commonly included in a mixed planting, maintained in a container, or planted in a series alongside a wall. It also suits being grown on a balcony or in a courtyard garden.
