“Red Cherry” is a variety of the commonly known Strawberry Guava and is a shrub grown for its foliage and ornamental fruit. It bears small, red, edible fruit amidst the lush, green foliage. These are produced in autumn and can be eaten fresh or used to make jam. The fruit have a thin skin, juicy interior, and are soft and tasty. It typically grows to 2.5 m tall and 2 m wide and can be trimmed as necessary. Best performance with this shrub is achieved when it is grown on a well-drained, sheltered, frost free site in full sun. “Red Cherry” is commonly included in a mixed planting, grown for specifically for its fruit, added to a tropical garden, trimmed into a hedge, or used as a backdrop for other plants. The fruit is great for attracting birds into the garden.
