The Dayton apple tree bears fruit that ripen in autumn which are are glossy red with flesh that is crisp and juicy but mildly tart. They are great for eating fresh. This deciduous tree typically grows to 4 m tall and the same wide. It is self-pollinating and so does not require another apple variety planted close by to set fruit. The Dayton apple is commonly planted for fruit production, added to a mixed planting, or maintained in a courtyard garden.
