The Merton Russet apple tree bears large sized fruit in autumn that are brown and heavily russeted. The flesh is crisp with a sweet flavour making this apple great for eating fresh. This deciduous tree typically grows to 3.5 m tall and 2.5 m wide, though the ultimate size will depend on the rootstock it is grown on. It is self-pollinating and so does not require another apple variety planted close by to set fruit. The Merton Russet apple tree is commonly planted for fruit production, added to a mixed planting, or maintained in a courtyard garden.
