'Winter Banana' Apple

How to grow 'Winter Banana' apple trees in NZ

Winter Banana' apple trees thrive in New Zealand's temperate climate, producing large, aromatic fruit with a mild, banana-like flavour. Plant in full sun with well-drained, fertile soil and shelter from strong winds. Space trees 3–4 m apart to allow for mature spread and good air circulation. Water regularly during dry spells, especially in the first few years. Prune the tree annually in winter to shape it and encourage productive growth. A pollinator variety such as 'Granny Smith' or 'Fuji' is recommended for reliable fruiting. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

'Winter Banana' apple trees typically grow to 3–4 m tall and 3 m wide when grafted onto a semi-dwarf rootstock. Space trees 3–4 m apart to allow for proper canopy development, good airflow, and ease of maintenance. This spacing also helps reduce disease risk and ensures optimal fruit production.
