The Comice pear tree (Pyrus communis Doyenne du Comice) is regarded as having the best flavour of all the pear varieties. It bears green skinned fruit which has a blush of pink when ripe. These ripen in autumn and are held amidst the fresh, green foliage which develops yellow tones in autumn before falling. This variety requires another variety planted nearby such as William Bon Chretien or Winter Nelis to aid pollination and produce good yields. It typically grows to 4 m tall and 3.5 m wide but can be trimmed as necessary. Best yields are achieved when it is planted in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered site, with good soil moisture during dry periods. It is tolerant of cool climates and frost, though a late frost in spring may reduce the yield. The Doyenne du Comice pear is commonly grown for fruit production, included into a mixed planting, or grown as a specimen.
