“Taihape” is a variety of Quince that produces large and rounded, golden fruit in autumn with flesh that is aromatic, tender, and very flavoursome. The fruit arise from the masses of white blossoms in spring which are borne across the tree. This variety does not require another variety planted alongside to produce fruit and will produce in both warm and cold climates from a young age. The foliage comprises dark green leaves which develop yellow tones in autumn before falling. It typically grows to 4 m tall and 3 m wide with an upright habit and performs best when planted in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered site. It is tolerant of dry periods, frost, and cool climates. “Taihape” is commonly grown as a specimen or included in mixed planting with the added benefit of fruit that make a great jelly.
