What are the landscaping uses for Carex glauca in NZ?

Carex glauca is a great choice for landscaping projects across NZ. It is commonly mass planted either as a ground cover or on a bank or included in borders or mixed plantings. This hardy, blue grass is also perfect for coastal and modern gardens where it can be used as a lawn or Mondo grass substitute. Carex glauca is favoured by landscapers for its foliage, tidy form, and versatility.

Carex glauca care and maintenance

The most important part of Carex glauca care is to make sure they have a well-drained soil. It will not do well on wet or heavy soils. The next critical elements are weed control and The Plant Company recommends an organic mulch is spread around the plants after planting. They should be fed in spring with a native plant fertiliser. At this time any dead leaves can be removed. The plants are generally not trimmed aside from removing spent flower heads if desired. They rarely suffer from any pests or diseases but you may want to keep an eye out for mealy bugs. Overall, they are a very low maintenance plant and easy to care for.

Growing a Carex glauca lawn

Carex glauca makes for a wonderful lawn substitute, almost akin to Mondo grasses. It grows to about 10 cm tall and can be cut with a lawn mower if desired. The plants are spaced 10 cm apart and they will fill in over time. Pay particular attention to ensuring good drainage and fertilise the plants in spring and autumn with garden fertiliser.
