Carex tenuiculmis

Carex tenuiculmis is a NZ native, ornamental grass that features striking red-bronze foliage held with a graceful arch. It grows as a tidy clump to about 75 cm tall and 50 cm wide, preferring a moist or boggy soil and a full sun position. Carex tenuiculmis is commonly planted around pond or alongside streams, used in wetland plantings, mass planted either as a groundcover or on a bank, included in borders or mixed plantings, or simply grown in a container. A mass planting creates a visual spectacle and is the best way to showcase this plant.

What are the landscaping uses for Carex tenuiculmis in NZ?

Carex tenuiculmis is a great choice for landscaping projects across NZ. It is commonly mass planted either as a ground cover or on a bank or included in borders or mixed plantings. This hardy, NZ native grass is also perfect for wetland areas, swampy sites, and anywhere with heavy soils. Carex tenuiculmis is favoured for its foliage, tidy form, and versatility.

Carex tenuiculmis care and maintenance

The most important part of Carex tenuiculmis care is to make sure they have a soil that does not dry out. The next critical elements are weed control and The Plant Company recommends an organic mulch is spread around the plants after planting. They should be fed in spring with a native plant fertiliser. At this time any dead leaves can be removed. The plants are generally not trimmed aside from removing spent flower heads if desired. They rarely suffer from any pests or diseases but you may want to keep an eye out for mealy bugs. Overall, they are a very low maintenance plant and easy to care for.
