Desmoschoenus spiralis, Pingao Grass

Desmoschoenus spiralis is a grass that is found naturally on active sand dunes. The leaves emerge green and develop yellow tones as the soil or sand dune dries out and when viewed from a distance, the plant has a distinctive orange hue. It typically grows to 70 cm tall and 1 m wide but will colonise a large area given time. Desmoschoenus spiralis favours slopes and moving sand, hence is ideal for coastal environments.

Desmoschoenus spiralis is a grass that is found naturally on active sand dunes. The leaves emerge green and develop yellow tones as the soil or sand dune dries out and when viewed from a distance, the plant has a distinctive orange hue. The plant spreads through creeping stems which expand out from the plant and take root as they get buried by shifting sand. It typically grows to 70 cm tall and 1 m wide but will colonise a large area given time. Desmoschoenus spiralis favours slopes and moving sand, hence is ideal for coastal environments. That said, it will still perform well on non-sand slopes and banks and should be mass planted.
