Growing Eleocharis sphacelata Successfully in NZ

Eleocharis sphacelata is a native wetland plant ideal for ponds, wetlands, and water gardens across New Zealand. It thrives in full sun with its roots submerged in shallow to deep water, making it perfect for naturalising around the edges of lakes or constructed wetlands. This hardy rush tolerates a wide range of water depths and is excellent for stabilising banks and improving water quality. Regular thinning may be needed in nutrient-rich environments to manage its vigorous growth.

Eleocharis sphacelata Care Tips

Tall Spike Rush is a low-maintenance plant that benefits from a few basic care practices. Plant it in full sun with its base submerged in freshwater for best growth. It prefers still or slow-moving water and can tolerate varying water levels. Trim dead or old stems in late winter to encourage fresh regrowth. In nutrient-rich ponds, occasional thinning may be required to prevent overcrowding. It does not need fertiliser and is generally pest-free, making it ideal for naturalistic plantings.

Plant Size and Spacing

Eleocharis sphacelata typically grows to 1-1.5 metres tall, forming upright, grass-like clumps. When planting, space individuals approximately 50-70 cm apart to allow room for natural spreading. In time, the plant will form dense colonies, making it ideal for mass planting in wetland areas or around pond margins.
