Hakonechloa macra Albovariegata, commonly known as Japanese Forest Grass, is a lovely ornamental grass. It features lush foliage that is variegated dark green with narrow, cream stripes. It grows as a large, soft looking mound to about 1 m tall and the same wide, performing best when planted in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained, sheltered site. It is tolerant of short periods of dry, heavy soils, coastal conditions, and light frost. It may go dormant during winter in cooler climates to regrow when conditions warm. The Japanese Forest Grass is commonly used to line pathways or waterways, added to a mixed or border planting, planted around outdoor living areas, grown around the base of large trees, mass planted either as a groundcover or on a bank, or simply grown in a large container.
