Hakonechloa macra Aureola, commonly known as Golden Japanese Forest Grass or Hakone Grass, is a brightly coloured and stunning ornamental grass. It features variegated golden foliage with green stripes near the leaf margins. It grows as a large, soft looking mound to about 1 m tall and the same wide. Best growth is achieved when planted in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained, sheltered site. Too much shade can cause the golden portion to fade to lime green. It is tolerant of coastal conditions and light frost only.
