Liriope Purple Explosion, commonly known as Purple Liriope, Lilyturf or Monkeygrass, is grown for its lovely flowers and tidy foliage. Flower spikes rise above the strap-like, dark green leaves to bear masses of showy, deep purple flowers. The long-lasting flowers are borne through summer and autumn, blending wonderfully with the foliage. This Lilyturf is an herbaceous perennial and grows as a tidy clump to about 25 cm tall and 35 cm wide, performing best when planted in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained, sheltered site. It is tolerant of cool climates, moderate frost, dry periods, and coastal environments. It may die back during winter in colder regions to regrow in spring when conditions warm, but otherwise remains evergreen. Liriope Purple Explosion is an excellent choice for cottage gardens, adding to a mixed planting, including in borders, or for planting around outdoor living areas.
