Acaena novae-zelandiae is an herbaceous perennial which grows to just 10 cm tall but can cover 4-5 metres inside of two years with good growing conditions. The leaves are dull green and covered with silky hairs. It thrives in poorer soils where other plants will struggle but does require good drainage and moisture during dry periods. Acaena novae-zelandiae is commonly used in rock gardens or included in borders. A mass planting affords a spectacular display with this plant.

Acaena novae-zelandiae Details

Acaena novae-zelandiae is an herbaceous perennial which grows to just 10 cm tall but can cover 4-5 square metres inside of two years with good growing conditions. The leaves are dull green and covered with silky hairs. Tiny flowers, clustered into balls, are borne at the end of erect stems during summer and result in fruits that have spiny hooks that can attach themselves to fur or clothing. It thrives in poorer soils where other plants will struggle but does require good drainage and moisture during dry periods. It is tolerant of moderate frost as well as coastal conditions. Acaena novae-zelandiae is commonly used in rock gardens or included in borders. A mass planting affords a spectacular display with this plant.
