It grows as a dense mat to about 20 cm tall and 1 m wide, performing best when planted in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of short periods of dry, moderate frost, and coastal environments. Helichrysum retortum is commonly included in rock and cottage gardens, used in border plantings, planted around outdoor living areas such as pools and the like, or mass planted as a groundcover or on a bank.
