Pachysandra axillaris is an herbaceous perennial that forms a dense mat of lovely foliage. The leaves are a glossy, dark green and may develop yellow tones during winter, particularly in cooler climates. Small and showy, cream and pink coloured flowers are borne above the foliage in summer. It spreads via creeping stems and typically reaches 40 cm tall and 60 cm wide. Best results with this plant are achieved when it is grown in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of both coastal conditions, moderate frost, and shade. Pachysandra axillaris is commonly used as a groundcover, planted around the base of larger trees, or grown in a container. A mass planting will result in a dense carpet.
