Tetragonia tetragonioides is a leafy, NZ native groundcover that grows naturally along beaches amongst driftwood, in sand dunes, and on cliff faces and rock ledges. It has a trailing habit and will form a thick carpet on the ground or climb though other vegetation and hang downwards as it grows to 30-50 cm tall and 2 m wide. Tetragonia tetragonioides is commonly used as a hardy groundcover in coastal gardens, to cover banks, planted so it can trail over a wall or bank, or maintained as a trailing plant in a container.

Tetragonia tetragonioides Details

Tetragonia tetragonioides is a leafy, NZ native groundcover. This hardy plant naturally grows along beaches amongst driftwood, in sand dunes, and on cliff faces and rock ledges. It has a trailing habit and will form a thick carpet on the ground or climb though other vegetation and hang downwards as it grows to 30-50 cm tall and 2 m wide. The leaves are small, triangular in shape, thick, and bright green. The flowers in spring are yellow and result in a small, hard pod. This plant prefers a well-drained site in full sun that does not dry out. Tetragonia tetragonioides is commonly used as a hardy groundcover in coastal gardens, to cover banks, planted so it can trail over a wall or bank, or maintained as a trailing plant in a container.
