How to grow Agapanthus 'Lapis' in NZ

Agapanthus 'Lapis' grows best in a sunny position with well drained soil. Incorporating compost before planting will improve soil structure and support healthy root development. Water regularly during establishment, then only during prolonged dry periods once plants are settled. This hardy perennial adapts well to a range of soil types and performs strongly in coastal gardens. Plenty of sunlight encourages compact growth, healthy foliage, and prolific flowering throughout summer.

Agapanthus 'Lapis' care tips

Agapanthus 'Lapis' is a low maintenance perennial that requires very little ongoing care. Remove spent flower stems after flowering to keep the plant tidy and encourage energy back into growth. Apply a balanced fertiliser during spring to support healthy foliage and abundant blooms. Water during extended dry periods, particularly in warmer regions. Dividing mature clumps every few years helps maintain vigour, prevent overcrowding, and encourage continued flowering performance.

Agapanthus 'Lapis' size, spacing, and growth rate

Agapanthus 'Lapis' typically grows to around 40 to 60 centimetres tall when flowering and 40 to 50 centimetres wide. It has a moderate growth rate and gradually forms dense clumps of attractive foliage. Space plants approximately 40 to 50 centimetres apart to allow for mature growth and good airflow. Its compact size makes it ideal for borders, edging, mass plantings, containers, and smaller landscape designs.

Landscaping uses for Agapanthus 'Lapis'

Agapanthus 'Lapis' is ideal for borders, edging, coastal gardens, contemporary landscapes, mass plantings, and container displays. The rich blue flowers create strong visual impact and contrast beautifully with white flowering plants, ornamental grasses, and evergreen shrubs. It can be planted in groups for a striking summer display or used to define pathways and garden edges. Its compact habit and reliable flowering make it a valuable landscape plant.

Questions and Answers

Have a question about Agapanthus 'Lapis'? We are here to help.

Hi, I am wanting to plant this in several window planter boxes that are about 0.6m x 2m in size. What density of planting / how many plants would you recommend for this sized space? Thanks, Peter

Along a 2 m length I would put in four plants. That way they shouldn't merge in together. If you do want them to merge, opt for 30-40 cm between the plants.
