Allium sphaerocephalon (Round-Headed Leek) Details

Commonly known as the Round Headed Leak, this herbaceous perennial produces strap like, green leaves. In summer, slender stems up to 40 cm tall rise above the foliage bearing a ball of bi-coloured green and purple flowers. It typically grows to 50 cm tall and the same wide, performing best in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered site. It is tolerant of coastal environments and cold environments with plants often dying back during winter to regrow when conditions warm. This ornamental onion is commonly included in mixed plantings, cottage gardens, or border plantings with a mass planting giving exceptional displays.
