Viola hederacea is a ground covering plant that features lush foliage and pretty flowers. It produces green leaves which are held densely and spreads via runners that creep below the soil. The foliage is complemented with purple and white flowers which are produced almost year-round. This herbaceous perennial grows to about 10 cm tall and will spread to 50 cm wide inside of two years. Best results with this plant are achieved when it is grown in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site that does not dry out. It will tolerate mild frost and reasonable levels of shade. This Viola is commonly included in borders, used as a groundcover, planted between pavers or rocks, added to cottage gardens, maintained in a container, or used as a lawn substitute.
