Chionochloa rubra Details

Chionochloa rubra, commonly known as Red Tussock, is a large and striking NZ native tussock grass. It produces long and slender red leaves with a graceful arch which appears to flow in light breezes. It typically grows to 1 m tall and the same wide, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained site. It will grow well in partial shade conditions but colouring tends to be less intense. It is tolerant of dry periods, frost, cool climates, wind, coastal conditions, and a range of soil types, except the extremes of wet and dry. Chionochloa rubra is commonly planted alongside water features, mass planted either as a groundcover or on a bank, included in alpine plantings, used in rock gardens, added to borders, or used to line a path. Red Tussock makes a fantastic addition wherever it is used.
