Lomandra Little Con is a popular choice in landscaping projects across NZ. It is commonly mass planted either as a ground cover or on a bank, included in borders or mixed plantings, or planted around outdoor living areas such as pools and barbecue areas. This hardy ornamental grass is also perfect for gardens around commercial buildings that are often somewhat neglected for watering but where an elegant ornamental grass is desired. It is the gorgeous foliage and versatility of this plant that makes the Lomandra Little Con a popular choice in NZ landscaping.
Lomandra Little Con typically grows to a height of around 30 cm (approximately one foot). They grow to a similar width with beautiful, cascading foliage coloured dark green. The small size of this plant makes it a great option for border plantings.
The Lomandra Little Con grass grows as a compact, rounded ball green to about 30 cm tall and the same wide. Other Lomandra varieties typically grow 50-80 cm tall and wide. On this basis it is a dwarf variety compared to other Lomandra varieties. As a comparison, Lomandra Lime Tuff which is the most popular variety grows to 60 cm tall and wide.
The Lomandra Little Con plant performs best when positioned in full sun or part shade on a well-drained site. This is a hardy plant that tolerates frost, drought, cold climates, wind, coastal climates, and most soil types, except extreme wet. Above all else, make sure it is grown on well-drained soil that does not become water-logged. Similarly, if you intend to grow it in a pot, make sure that only potting media is used and never use garden soil. Browning on the tip ends or plants rotting in the middle is a sure sign they are too wet.
Lomandra Little Con is generally a hardy and low-maintenance plant that has few problems. However, like all living things, it can encounter some challenges. Over-watering is the most common issue. Symptoms include yellowing leaves, wilting, mushy stems, and plants turning black. To remedy, ensure good drainage and reduce your watering frequency. Yellowing or unevenly coloured leaves can indicate a nutrient issue and is easily corrected with garden fertiliser. Mealybugs will sometimes infest plants. They suck sap and leave a white, cottony residue. They are easily treated with a general insecticide. Fungal diseases are rare but can occur in overly damp conditions and are resolved by improving drainage and using a fungicide.
