Caryota ochlandra

Chinese Fishtail Palm

Commonly known as the Chinese Fishtail Palm, this is a large and stately Palm tree. This fast growing tree produces broad fronds with dark green leaves which are held loosely. These are borne off a stout trunk as it reaches 10 m tall and 3 m wide. An interesting feature of this tree are the flowers which resemble a fish tail, hence the common name. This tree performs best when positioned in full sun on a well-drained site. It will tolerate short periods of dry, some wind, and moderate frost though it should be protected while it is establishing. The Chinese Fishtail Palm is commonly grown as a specimen, planted around pool areas, used to border an entrance, planted in clusters, or included in tropical gardens.
