Dioon spinulosum

Gum Palm, Giant Dioon, Mexican Dioon

Dioon spinulosum is one of the tallest Cycads and features elegant fronds that radiate from a central crown. The dark green foliage is held with a gentle arch and are borne off a short trunk as it grows to 4 m tall and 3 m wide. Distinctive cones are produced on the male and female plants. The female plants have a large seed cone which resemble a pineapple and are quite aesthetic whilst male plants produce a small cone that is not overly aesthetic. This Cycad grows best when positioned in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. It is the most cold hardy of the Cycads and is tolerant of moderate frost and extended dry periods, though should be protected while it is establishing. We recommend using this Cycad in tropical gardens, growing as a specimen, including in a mixed planting, or for planting around outdoor living areas such as pools.
