Rhopalostylis cheesmanii is a fast growing and very attractive Nikau Palm tree. From a central trunk it produces broad fronds that are held upright with a gentle arch. They are dark green, handsome, and enable this NZ native to grow to about 10 m tall with a spread of 6 m. Cascades of small flowers in summer result in fruits that are green at first but ripen to bright red in autumn. These are great for attracting birds. This Palm grows best when planted on a well-drained, sheltered site that is frost free. It will take a light frost once established and requires good levels of soil moisture during dry periods. Rhopalostylis cheesmanii is highly sought after and very popular. It is a must for any sub-tropical garden or where an attractive specimen is required.
