The Acanthis mollis plant, commonly known as Bears Breeches or the Oyster plant, is an herbaceous perennial featuring lush foliage and striking flowers. Spikes rise above the foliage to bear purple and white hooded flowers from late spring through early summer. The flowers are complemented by large and glossy, dark green leaves. It grows as a clump to about 80 cm tall and the same wide, though will colonise a larger area with time. Best results with this plant are achieved when it is planted in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of dry periods, frost, and cool climates and in these conditions, it may die back to regrow again in spring. Acanthus mollis Bears Breeches is commonly mass planted beneath larger trees, added to mixed and border plantings, used to line a driveway or path, planted around outdoor living areas, included in cottage gardens, or maintained in a container. This is a popular plant due to its great aesthetics, versatility, and ease to grow.
