Actaea simplex Atropurpurea, commonly known as Bugbane, is an herbaceous perennial grown for its impressive flowers and foliage. In spring it produces bottlebrush-like, pale pink-white flowers on slender stems which rise above the foliage. The foliage comprises lush, brown-purple leaves which provides a great contrast to the flowers. It typically grows to 1.5 m tall and 75 cm wide, performing best in full sun on a well-drained site with good summer moisture. It is tolerant of light frost, coastal environments, and partial shade though in this instance leaf colouring will be less intense.
