Aechmea covata is a variety of Bromeliad grown for its lovely foliage and flowers. This herbaceous perennial grows as a clump and carries strap like, fresh green leaves. The foliage is adorned during spring and summer with large and showy, bright red flowers. The flowers and the foliage complement each other nicely. It typically grows to 40 cm tall and the same wide, performing best when grown in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered site. It is tolerant of cool climates but should be protected from frosts. Aechmea covata is ideal for growing in borders, mixed plantings, container planting, tropical gardens, or for planting around the pool or barbecue area.
