Allium ampeloprasum

Elephant Garlic

Commonly known as Elephant Garlic, this is an herbaceous perennial grown for its flavoursome bulbs. It produces lush and fleshy green leaves which are complemented with balls of light mauve coloured flowers in summer. It grows as a clump to about 50 cm tall and 30 cm wide, performing best when grown in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered site. It is tolerant of coastal environments and cold environments with plants often dying back during winter to regrow when conditions warm. Elephant Garlic is commonly included in herb gardens, added to mixed and border plantings, used in cottage gardens, or maintained in a container. The bulbs are generally harvested in autumn.
