Asparagus Purple Passion

“Purple Passion” is a vigorous variety of Asparagus that produces large yields of long and tasty, purple spears. The spears emerge from the ground and are cut every 3-4 days (when they reach 20 cm in length). The emerge from a crown and are harvested through spring. When the crown is still small (usually in the first year or two) it important to just let the plant produce the fern like foliage and not harvest any of the spears. If too many spears are cut the plant will produce poor yields in the following year. It typically grows to 75 cm tall and the same wide, though the foliage is normally cut back to ground level in late autumn. This variety grows best when positioned in full sun on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of frost, cool climates, some wind, and short periods of dry. “Purple Passion” is commonly included in a mixed planting, used in cottage gardens, added to the herb or vegetable garden, or maintained in a container; all with the added advantage of fresh Asparagus. This variety is resistant to most of the common Asparagus diseases.
