The Dichondra repens plant is a NZ native that makes for a spectacular groundcover. It comprises small green leaves held on prostrate stems. Tiny, yellow-green flowers are borne in summer but may also appear at other times through the year. It typically grows to 6 cm tall and 25 cm wide, performing best on a well-drained soil in either full sun or partial shade. It is tolerant of dry conditions, frost, and coastal conditions. The Dichondra repens plant is commonly used for planting between rocks and paving stones or as a replacement for grass, particularly for areas where normal grasses struggle. It is soft underfoot and when mown establishes as a thick dense carpet.
