Grass Flag

Grass Flag is one of the common names for Libertia paniculata, a NZ native grass which is grown for its pretty flowers. The flowers are pure white and held on slender stems among the leaves through spring and summer. They result in green seed capsules which mature orange. Plants have upright, dark green, sword-like leaves. It grows as a clump to about to 60 cm tall and the same wide but will colonise a larger area with its spreading roots. Best performance with this plant is achieved when it is planted in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site, though they are tolerant of coastal conditions, cool climates, and a range of soil conditions barring the extremes of wet and dry. Grass Flag is commonly mass planted, added to a mixed planting, used in borders, planted around the base of a larger tree, grown in a container, or planted around the pool or barbecue area.
